Only 3-5,000 are thought to have been manufactured in total between 1863 and 1873, with just around 300 manufactured with the fluted cylinder. The earliest revolvers were produced with fluted cylinders, as is this example, with the balance manufactured with conventional round cylinders. The fluted cylinder guns were produced circa 1863-1865 and appear in the serial number range under 1,000. The New Model Belt began production as a percussion pistol but was quickly adapted to metallic cartridges. The factory conversion of a percussion pistol to cartridge involved machining out part of the frame, as well as machining the cylinder and fitting it with a special cap. Not many have survived today in the original percussion configuration. These would have been handy sidearms during the war as well as on the frontier. These were right on the cutting edge with that double action. This was an early double action revolver made during the middle of the American Civil War. This one being very early with a serial number of “144”. The distinctive fluted cylinder also pegs this for one of the earliest and this feature makes an already scarce gun quite rare. This is in the “Navy” caliber of .36. The overall condition is fine. Original blue and case color finish. The action is excellent. The bore is very fine, bright with sharp rifling. Grips are solid. Numbers match. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 6-1/2 inches. Caliber: .36 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
