Description:
Model 1873 Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Ivory Grips, Mexican Silver Coin Sight, & Factory Letter, .45 Cal, mfg. 1879. This is a good early Colt Single Action straight out of the Old West. The included factory letter confirms the gun's original configuration as .45 caliber, barrel length not listed (standard 7 ½"), blue finish, stocks not listed, shipped to Schuyler, Hartley & Graham, New York, New York, on September 23, 1879. Schuyler, Hartley & Graham was one of the premier firearms retailers during the Wild West era and sold countless guns to hardware stores and individuals across the country through their popular catalogs. This revolver's ivory grips were undoubtedly installed by them in New York prior to resale. The barrel has been shortened in period to exactly 5 ½" with a Mexican silver dime fitted for a sight which would date from 1869-1897. Overall the metal has a smooth gray/brown patina with traces of bright original bluing within protected areas of the gripstraps. There is some very faint scattered blotchiness probably from being wrapped in a bag or cloth long ago. Very sharp gun overall with nice edges, smooth surfaces, and clear markings. Original retailer fitted ivory grips are fantastic. They fit excellent overall with just the slightest bit of shrinkage along the front and back and feel just perfect in hand. Beautiful smooth swirled yellow color with natural grain checking on the butt and no chips or cracks. Perfectly clear original barrel address, three-line patent dates, “45 CAL” marked triggerguard, and matching serial number “36069” stamped on the frame, triggerguard, and backstrap with partial number “6069” on the barrel and cylinder. Original hammer, trigger, cylinder pin, loading gate, ejector housing, and bullseye ejector with brass spring. The screws are probably all original but several are marred and a couple sit high. The action cocks with a nice firm mainspring and cycles the cylinder with a few issues. The hammer will not hold the first safety click and the second loading click is absent. Often the cylinder requires just a little manual assistance to fully rotate and lock up on time. Cylinder lock up is tight with only slight movement. Very good bore for a Colt of this vintage with crisp sharp rifling front to back and light/moderate fine blackpowder frosting throughout. Just a super cool good looking early cowboy gun that surely spent some time in Mexico or the Southwestern US during the height of the Wild West era (purportedly the gun came out of Southern California). *NOTE* Due to ivory restrictions this pistol will not be sold or shipped to residents of California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, or Washington.
