Description:
MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR Antique R. JOHNSON U.S. M1836 .54 FLINTLOCK Pistol

STANDARD ISSUE Used into the AMERICAN CIVIL WAR

Here we present an antique Robert Johnson Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol dated 1840 in Middletown, Connecticut. This .54 caliber, smoothbore, flintlock pistol is one of approximately 18,000 Model 1836 pistols manufactured by Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut. The Model 1836 was widely considered to be the best designed and manufactured flintlock pistol.

The pistol has an 8 1/2 inch round barrel with a brass front sight blade, swivel ramrod with button head and iron mountings. The barrel, ramrod, butt cap, barrel band and trigger guard are "bright" finish. The lock plate, hammer, and tang were once casehardened. The lock is marked "U.S. / R. JOHNSON / MIDDN.CONN. / 1840" below the brass pan. Inspection and proof marks are visible atop the barrel. The Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol was the standard issue handgun of the Mexican War and continued to be used well into the American Civil War.

The overall condition is good. The action partially functions and hold in the safety notch, but does not hold in the full cock position. Good, smooth bore for its age. Solid stock/grip with average handling wear and cartouche remnants on the left flat. Markings are legible. “1840” dated.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 8-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .54 Flintlock

Overall condition as seen in photos.
