FIRST YEAR PRODUCTION Revolver Here we present an antique Factory Engraved Colt Model 1855 “Root” Side-hammer Percussion Pocket Revolver, made circa 1855 in Hartford, Connecticut. This Samuel Colt design was named after Elisha K. Root, his factory superintendent, and it really shows Colt’s passion for innovation—something that played a huge role in his success. Just six years after introducing the Colt 1849 Pocket, Colt aimed to create an even better pocket revolver with this model. The Root featured several firsts for Colt: a “creeping” loading lever that made loading easier, Colt’s first solid frame, a right-side hammer for easier access to the cylinder pin, and a new way to turn the cylinder via the cylinder’s axis pin instead of the cylinder itself. Many of these ideas were experimental at the time but proved useful for future designs. However, the small parts in the mechanism were quite fragile, though scaling them up in the 1855 series of rifles and shotguns helped improve durability. Interestingly, despite significant impacts the 1855 Root had on the industry, it never reached the “legendary” or “iconic” status and has never been featured in a major Hollywood style film or production! The overall condition is good. Finely engraved frame and barrel. The trigger does not hold in the cock position, but the action functions otherwise. This is more than likely due to a weak trigger spring. Excellent grip. Markings are legible. Numbers match. The bore is in good shape for its age, has darkened with some rifling intact. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 3-1/2 inches. Caliber: .28 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
