Description:
William Ford 20 Gauge Bar Action Sidelock – Exceptional Pre-War English Craftsmanship (1936)
Offered here is a truly outstanding example of English gunmaking: a William Ford 20 gauge bar action sidelock shotgun, produced in 1936 and preserved in remarkably original condition. William Ford was a respected Birmingham-based gunmaker and award-winning barrel maker to the trade from 1888 to 1989, known for his precision craftsmanship and attention to detail. This elegant and petite sidelock rivals the finest work of Holland & Holland and other top-tier names.
Features:
  • Original finishes throughout: bluing, case color, and stock finish
  • Crisp bold acanthus engraving and well-figured wood
  • Narrow action frame – beautifully scaled and finely proportioned (see quarter comparison photo)
  • Full length-of-pull: 15 1/8" – rarely found in small bore English doubles
  • Stock dimensions: Drop at comb 1 3/8", drop at heel 2 3/8"
  • Barrels: 25" with a distinctive Churchill rib
    • Mirror bores: Right .618", Left .615"
    • Chokes: Right barrel Improved Cylinder (7/1000), Left Modified (16/1000)
    • Original 2 3/4" chambers
  • Tight on face, top lever well right of center
  • Weight: 5 lbs 10 7/8 oz – a perfect gentleman’s quail gun configuration
  • No cracks to the wood, no loose ribs, and barrels chime perfectly
This is a rare opportunity to acquire a best-quality English sidelock from the golden era of gunmaking. In just 8 years, it will celebrate its centennial, yet it looks as if it were finished yesterday.
