Description:
Purdey Live Pigeon Side-by-Side Shotgun – 1901
Built for the Ring. Honed for Competition. Preserved in Excellence.
Step back to an era when live pigeon shooting was the pinnacle of shotgun sport—and Purdey was the gold standard in the ring. This exceptional side-by-side, crafted in 1901 by James Purdey & Sons, was purpose-built for the demands of high-stakes competition.
Configured for ultimate reliability, it features:
  • No safety, for instantaneous readiness
  • Third fastener and slip clips, adding strength and lockup integrity
  • Heavy 30" Sir Joseph Whitworth fluid pressed steel barrels, proofed for Nitro and 1¼ oz loads
  • Wide pigeon rib with ivory front and center beads, offering superb sight picture and target acquisition
  • .733" mirror bores: Right barrel choked Full (30/1000), left barrel choked Tight Full (37/1000)
  • 2¾" chambers, ready for modern field or competition loads
The action includes Purdey's signature self-opening system, powered by their classic locks for enduring performance. A Miller single trigger, later added, enhances shootability with crisp, reliable pulls—still in production and respected today.
Aesthetic details include:
  • Rose & scroll engraving with extra finish carved oak leaf embellishments on the fences
  • Strong original case hardening, crisp engraving, and no cracks to the wood
  • Excellent stock dimensions: LOP of 14 5/8", Drop at Comb 1½", Drop at Heel 2?"
  • Tight on face, with barrels that ring true and no loose ribs
Accompanied by a perfectly fitted pigskin case, with one exterior strap.
This is not only a fine example of Edwardian-era Purdey craftsmanship—it’s a working testament to the elegance and endurance of a bygone sport.
