Description:
"29 ¾" Bright blade. Blade is etched with patriotic motifs. One side is etched with cross cannons in a panoply of arms while the opposite side is etched with the first national flag. Faint “CSA" is etched on the left side of the blade above where the ricasso is. Cast hilt and wire wrapped grip remain in very good condition. Black leather scabbard shows light surface cracking with stitching remaining tight. The throat is inscribed “J. A. WEST / 1ST LIEUT / CO. C 3RD REG / VA R". Jacob A West is found in the Virginia rosters as 1st Lieut. Company C, 3rd Virginia Reserves (Buckingham Reserves), Booker’s Regiment, Walker’s Brigade. Jacob was promoted to 1st lieutenant November 7, 1864. The 3rd Regiment was organized late September 1864. The 3rd would see action in the Petersburg and Appomattox campaigns. 6 soldiers from the regiment would be present during the surrender on April 9TH 1865 at Appomattox. Lt. West would sign the oath of Allegiance in Farmville, Va on April 28, 1865.
