The Model 1877 was Colt’s first venture into double action revolvers. It was quite successful, selling 166,849 from 1877 through 1909. Nonetheless, there was some hesitation to move away from the single action mechanism, which had proven itself. Famous adopters of the Lightning were William “Billy the Kid” Bonney and John Wesley Hardin, along with “Doc” Holliday. Doc’s weapon of choice early in his western career was an 1851 Colt Navy revolver. Later, Doc carried both a nickel-plated .41 caliber Colt Thunderer and the .38 caliber Colt Lightning. The Model 1877, designed by William Mason in 1876, was produced starting January 1877 in three calibers, earning three unofficial nicknames: the “Lightning” (.38 Long Colt), the “Thunderer” (.41 Long Colt), and the “Rainmaker” (.32 Long Colt, introduced in 1887). Distributor Benjamin Kittredge coined these names for marketing, though the factory never officially used them. The .41 caliber “Thunderer” was Billy the Kid’s preferred weapon when he was killed in 1881. Not only cultural icons of their time, this series of Colt revolvers has also made many modern appearances in pop culture. Featured in movies like “Tombstone” and both Volumes of “Kill Bill”, it’s not a wonder that such a classic revolver has found its way into video games! Most famously, a Model 1877 Lightning and Thunder can be unlocked in “Assassin's Creed Syndicate”. The overall condition is fine. Excellent action. Must of the original blue finish is present and preserved. Traces of case coloring can be found on the frame. The bore is shinny bright with sharp rifling. Markings are legible. Visible numbers match. Both grips are fine and have maintained crisp checkering. Own the original! This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 4-1/2 inches.
