The miquelet is an early and sturdy form of flintlock popular throughout the Ottoman Empire from the seventeenth into the early twentieth century. Several elaborately decorated guns very similar to this example are still preserved in Istanbul, possibly made for the Ottoman Imperial guard. A “Miquelet” is a Spanish-developed flintlock mechanism used in muskets and pistols from the late 16th to mid-19th centuries. It is a distinctive type of snaplock firing mechanism, originally involving flint against steel, prevalent across Spain, Portugal, the Ottoman Empire, Italy, North Africa, and the Balkans. The term “miquelet lock” emerged in the 19th century, possibly coined by British troops during the Peninsular War to describe muskets used by local militia. In Spain, it was traditionally called “llave de rastrillo,” meaning “rake lock,” while in Catalonia and Valencia, it was known as “pany de pedrenyal,” meaning “flint lock.” The overall condition is good. Light gray barrel patina. Strong action. The stock is solid overall with a few cracks on both sides of the butt (stable). Some forend chipping is present. The bore is smooth and in good shape for its age. A triangle above “BC” and “322” marked on top of the breech of the barrel. One inlay is absent on the right of the forend. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 47-1/2 inches. Caliber: .65 Flint Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
