Description:
Antique Ornate OTTOMAN Style “DRAGON” Flintlock BLUNDERBUSS DAG/KNEE Pistol
Historic EARLY 1800s Naval Ship Boarding Gun
Here we present an antique Ornate Ottoman Style Flintlock Blunderbuss Dag/Knee Pistol, made circa the early 1800s. The blunderbuss is a firearm with a short, large caliber barrel flared at the muzzle and frequently throughout the entire bore and used with shot and other projectiles. The blunderbuss is commonly considered to be an early predecessor of the modern day shotgun, with similar military and defensive use. It was effective only at short range, lacking accuracy at long range. A blunderbuss in handgun form was called a Dragon, and it is from this that the term “Dragoon” evolved. The flintlock blunderbuss was the original coach gun, being a short, handy and devastating weapon at close range. It was used in many capacities, not the least of which were for naval boarding or defending vessels by pirates and navies alike!
This style of pistol came into vogue in the mid to late-1700s. The captain of the U.S.S. Constitution (you may know that fine old ship as "Old Ironsides") owned a pair of these in a cased set.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. This piece is reconverted. Good bore for its age. A crack is found in front of the trigger guard that wraps both sides of the forend. Some movement is present with light pressure. Hand checkered wrist. Lightly engraved barrel. Absent ramrod.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
