Description: Very rare Oberndorf Mauser Pre-98 Transitional factory sporting rifle retailed by Ernst Steigleder, Berlin & Suhl. These actions were the immediate precursor to the Mauser 98 action. Only approximately 4,185 of these actions were produced incorporating many of the features ultimately seen on the Model 98. Some actions were destroyed in testing. Some were sold to Rigby for Rigby sporting rifle production and some were built into factory Mauser sporting rifles such as this example. In 50 years of collecting Mauser Sporting Rifles this is the first and only example I have seen. I have seen a number of these on Rigby rifles. Serial numbers are among the earliest of the Mauser Sporting Rifle series of approximately 127,000. This rifle carries serial number 317 and all part numbers are matching. The Pre-98 Transitional Mauser is covered on pages 81-84 of Jon Speed's book and a picture of a similar pre-98 Transitional Sporting Rifle is on page 87. This rifle in 9x57 shows extensive use. The barrel is 24" and missing the front sight blade. The rear sight has one folding leaf. There is a barrel tie down screw with steel escutcheon. The bore is quite good. The transitional action has the classic pear shaped bolt knob and is topped with an early and surprisinly clear Voigtlaner & Sohn fixed power scope in claw mounts. The front receiver ring bears the Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf 1898 markings. The Prince of Wales stock has an unmarked composition buttplate and a 13 1/2" LOP. Checkering at the pistol grip only and well worn. Suhl type stock side panels and schnable forend tip. I do believe that Rigby made more Transitional 98 sporting rifles than did the Mauser Factory. The serial numbers in the back of Speed's book support my impression. Like me, this may be the first and only one you will ever see. Price: $4,750.00 |
