Restore Special Early L.C. Smith 12 GA Shotgun with Matching Barrels
Offered here for sale and just acquired is this fine opportunity for the shotgun enthusiast/gunsmith restorer to acquire a vintage L.C. Smith 12 gauge sxs shotgun with matching barrels. This vintage L.C. Smith shotgun with serial number 333584 and a "00" grade marking was manufactured in 1912 by the Hunter Arms Company in Fulton, New York. It falls within the range of 336,573 to 341,717, which corresponds to shotguns produced in 1912. The "00" grade was the lowest grade of pre-1913 L.C. Smith shotguns. Introduced in 1898, it was designed as an affordable, reliable field gun. These shotguns featured plain lock plates stamped with "L.C. Smith" and were equipped with Armor Steel barrels. The No. 00 was available in 10, 12, 16, and 20 gauges, with the 12-gauge being the most common.
The shotgun has matching 30" and 28" serial numbered barrels which suggest it was a custom or special-order configuration. The receiver and side plates appear to have had a refinish done long ago. The stock is untouched however there is a hairline crack through the wrist. The shorter barrel appears to have been the heavier used as it is generally a grey patina and its condition shows that it was certainly carried for many years. The bores are still good with some dark patches but not pitting. The longer barrel carries much of original finish.
Certainly this appears to be a very worthwhile project for the right individual.
