For generations, terms like “Squirrel Rifle”, “Barn Gun”, or “Poor Boy” were used when referring to a plain, inexpensive, home-grown working tool. This style of rifle would have been made entirely by hand, using hand-operated tooling done in a frontier setting. There were strong pockets of recorded long rifle manufacture and use throughout the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio and the Carolinas. This rifle features double set triggers, iron trigger guard and ramrod ferules. Made with no butt plate and a small circular divot in the right side of the stock instead of a patchbox, made to hold grease for patches. 46 1/4” octagonal, rifled barrel in .40 caliber. The overall condition is good. Dark patina throughout. The set triggers function together but the lock does not presently hold half- or full-cock. The cock is cracked but stable. The bore is dim and untouched with visible rifling. The stock shows much use and there is a subtle graft in the forestock with the seam being at the midpoint between the rear and middle ramrod tubes. Some small slivers stabilized. There is a space in the ramrod channel forward of the trigger guard where the ramrod is showing through. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 46 ¼ inches. Caliber: .40 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
