Description:
NSN, .54 Caliber, 33" barrel with a very good bore that has light-moderate pitting within the grooves. This is an 1850dated rifle (on both lock and barrel tang), with the barrel and lock having an overall pewter gray patina, and light pitting at the breech-end around the nipple bolster. The lock has clear "HARPERS / FERRY / 1850" marking behind the hammer, and "(American Eagle) / US" ahead. The walnut stock has small handling marks and blemishes scattered about the added military oil finish, with crisp inspector cartouches on the left side. The brass bands, trigger guard, and patchbox are in very good shape with a mellow ochre tarnish throughout, and a correct brass-tipped ramrod is included. The rifle has been altered for a saber bayonet by a slight shortening of the forend and nosecap, and the addition of a lug on the right side of the barrel into a vertical dovetail added 3 1/2" back from the muzzle. The rifle comes with a Model 1855 Rifle bayonet that measures 26" overall, with a 21 3/8" curved blade with wide single fullers. The metal has an overall bright gray patina, with some scattered spots of mild freckling and pinprick pitting throughout. The ricasso is unmarked, but a number is stamped on the grip flat of the brass hilt "(superimposed 2 and 4)0." The brass itself has numerous handling marks and blemishes, with a yellow-ochre patina throughout. This is a great looking "Mississippi Rifle", with avery well-done bayonet alteration, and is in very good-fine condition overall. Antique;
