SCARCE Antique ETHAN ALLEN & Co. .22 RF Single Shot VEST POCKET Derringer

Here we present an antique Ethan Allen & Co. .22 Single Shot Vest Pocket Derringer Pistol, made circa 1869-71 in Worcester, Massachusetts. The gun measures 3 7/8 inches long and was advertised as being the smallest and lightest pistol on the market at the time. The barrel pivots to the right for loading and was not made with an extractor.
The Single Shot Derringer was designed to be a close quarters conceal and carry defense pistol in a day in which almost everyone carried a firearm. Whether in a busy Eastern city or a dusty Western boom town, a small, simple and reliable firearm was the order of the day. This .22 rimfire pistol was small and simple, exactly what most people needed.
The top barrel flat retains a very clear E. ALLEN & Co. MAKERS stamp. This little .22 pistol was probably not the most practical weapon with its small controls, one shot, and high likelihood that one might lose it before they used it (even in their pocket). It is, however, well-made and a curiosity. This is truly a rare find and would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
The overall condition is very good. Bright gray patina. Strong action. The smoothbore is good and has retained a light shimmer. Very good, lightly handled. Markings are legible.
