Description:
SCARCE 1 of 600 Antique R. & J. D. JOHNSON U.S. M1816 FLINTLOCK Musket

1831 Dated LOCK & TANG CIVIL WAR Musket

Here we present an antique R. & J.D. Johnson U.S. Contract Model 1816 Flintlock Musket, manufactured by R. & J.D. Johnson in Middletown, Connecticut in 1831.  This musket was originally manufactured with a flintlock and was converted to percussion in the period leading up to or during the American Civil War. This large, smooth bore musket was still getting the job done 30 years after its manufacture.

The Model 1816 U.S. Flintlock Musket was made at both the Springfield Armory (325,000) and the Harper’s Ferry Armory (350,000). Additionally, more than a dozen contractors also made the Model 1816 Muskets during its production years, with R. & J.D. Johnson being one of them. Though these contractors added 146,000 muskets, Johnson was only responsible for 600 of them after the U.S. government signed a contract with them in 1828 and 1829. There were three different styles of the M1816 that were developed, with those being Types I, II, and III. With only 600 total produced, this is a very rare contract U.S. martial musket!

These were some of the most abundant weapons available to both sides, being in the hands of the state militias, in the first days of the American Civil War. This musket is symbolic for the westward expansion of the country throughout the first half of the 19th century. The M1816 Springfield saw service in the Texan Revolution including the Battle of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. After the independence of Texas, the 1816 musket was chosen as the first standard musket of the Texan Army in 1839.

The overall condition is good. Original flintlock! Weathered gray patina throughout. The action is strong. The bore is smooth and dim. The butt stock has been repaired with well-blended grafting which can be observed in the photos. A faint cartouche remains on the left stock flat. A neat example of a rare contract Model 1816 from the early Republic!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 42 inches.

Caliber: .69 Flintlock

Overall condition as seen in photos.
