Late 18th Century AMERICAN ASSEMBLED Musket
Here we present an antique American Composite Flintlock Militia Style Musket made circa the late 1700s. During the Revolutionary War and Post-Revolutionary War Era, many gunmakers were forced to cannibalize parts from guns manufactured in various foreign countries. These guns, referred to as composites, contained disparate parts and are therefore difficult to date with any degree of accuracy. This example appears to be a late 18th century American assembled musket given the maple stock. This musket could certainly have been made before the American War for Independence and converted in the days leading up to the American Civil War.
This period of United States history saw quite a small national standing army and hosts of statewide militias. These were meant for repelling foreign invasion, creating a barrier between states and the federal government, defending towns from attack and uprisings, especially against Native Americans and slaves, but also from bandits, along with other policing duties. Militias were sometimes longstanding, prestigious and influential organizations. At other times they were ad hoc and reactive to the given circumstances. There was a great distrust of a federally controlled militia system or a large standing army in the early days of the Republic.
The overall condition is good. Reconverted. Patina throughout. The action is strong. The bore is smooth and dim. The stock shows use and remains solid.
