Description:
Marlin Model 38 pump action, .22 S,L,LR, #75xx. This model was apparently manufactured just two years and in my 65 years of collecting, I have encountered just four. The design of these rifles incorporates the most elegant takedown mechanism in the industry, and is really marvelous. There is one glaring caveat, which I will get too when I'm through raving. The rifle iremains in near excellent condition with 97+% of the original barrel and receiver blue. The magazine beyond the forearm is in like condition, and, along with the action parts, shows operational wear between the pump handle and the receiver. The top of the rear sight has flaked to brown. Now the caveat. On the right rear top of the receiver there is a patch of light pitting which extends slightly onto the right side receiver flat. This is one of those unfortunate things you encounter to which you can only say, "Damn!". The wood retains 98% varnish and is almost flawless. Bore and mechanics are excellent.
Marlin's engineering and machining excellence really shine in the Model 38. I wish there were more of them available. In spite of its one cosmetic problem, the rarity of this model still lends it collector value.
