Description:
NSN, .75 Caliber, 33" barrel with a very good bore that has light pitting along its length. This is a rare British carbine that has a "VR" cyphered, "ENFIELD" lock, and extensive military proofs. The barrel has an overall smooth plum-brown patina with a good amount of the original browned finish remaining, and some mottled gray towards the muzzle. The lock and hammer have an overall mottled gray-brown patina with areas of mild freckling scattered throughout. The pin-fastened walnut stock is in fine shape with an old arsenal-added military oil finish, clear stamps (including the Enfield cartouche on the right side of the butt) and only minor handling marks scattered about. The brass trigger guard, buttplate, nosecap, and thimbles have an even, yellow-ochre patina, as well as a few traces of original blue just visible on the Lovell bayonet catch. The carbine is accompanied by a correct, original socket bayonet that measures 21" overall, with a 17" angular blade having hollow-ground back flutes. The blade is finished bright and has extensive markings on the inside face, near the shank. The socket and shank have retained most of the original blue finish with some fading to plum-brown in spots, as well as mild silvering on some of the exposed edges and surfaces. The bayonet is housed in an original leather scabbard with tarnished brass throat, frog stud, and slightly dented chape. The leather is in fine condition with some minor scuffs, and a few short separations along the sewn seam. These pre-Crimean War Sergeant-of-the-Line carbines are very rarely encountered in the US, and almost never with a correct original bayonet. This example is in fine-near excellent condition and would make a stellar addition to any collection. Antique;
