Description:
For sale is a super rare, English-finished Grulla by John Powell. Not your typical Grulla, these guns started as barreled actions in Spain and were shipped “in the white” to the UK and were finished just outside of London by top craftsman from the English trade, including men who worked for all of the big-name gunmakers. I’ve attached a letter from one such craftsman, explaining the story behind these interesting guns. Craftsman included well known engravers Ken Hunt and Geoffrey Casbard (both of Purdey), actioner Leslie Paul (of Purdey, Rigby, and Atkin, Grant, & Lang), stocker Brian Sorrell (of Purdey), barrel maker Stephen York (of Purdey), barrel blacking by Johnson Brothers in London (who did much of the London trade), and color casing by Ray St. Ledger (who did most of the London trade). The gun even has London proof marks (2 3/4” nitro proof). This is not your typical Grulla!

This sleek 12-bore features a Holland & Holland style sidelock ejector action that's beautifully shaped and profiled with crisp beaded fences and gently rounded bottom. It is adorned with full-coverage, best quality English rose and scroll engraving equal to that found on a London Best gun. Other notable features include hand-detachable sidelocks, hidden third fastener, disc set strikers, cocking indicators, gold inlaid “Safe”, and a rolled trigger guard. The 28" barrels are beautifully struck and are choked IC/IM. They're topped with a concave game rib and are balanced by a nicely figured walnut stock. The stock is classically configured: straight grip, splinter forend, fine hand-cut checkering, and drop points.

This shotgun is in nice used condition. The barrel bluing remains strong. There is one ding on barrel barely visible on the interior of the bore. The action is tight (the forend has a smidge of play but the barrels are nice and tight), ejectors are strong and in time, and the triggers are nice and crisp. The stock finish is good having been refreshed and refinished in the UK (with slight metal proudness on bottom of action), checkering is good, and the wood is sound with no cracks.

Grulla was established in 1932 and has been in business longer than any other maker in Spain. They are one of Spain's (and Europe's) top gun makers. Their customers include the King of Spain and the Duke of Northumberland. It’s Spanish roots combined with its English finishing makes this an interesting, rare, high quality, yet affordable double gun that you won’t likely see again.
