The Browning SA-22, also known as the Browning Semi-Automatic .22 or .22 Auto Rifle, holds a unique and distinguished place in firearm history as one of John M. Browning‚s most enduring and elegant designs. It‚s particularly notable for being one of the first commercially successful semi-automatic rifles chambered in .22 Long Rifle.
Designed by the Master: The SA-22 was designed by the legendary John Moses Browning himself. He filed patents for the rifle in 1912 and they were granted in 1913 and 1914.
Innovative Design: Browning conceived a lightweight, compact, and reliable blowback-operated semi-automatic .22 rifle. Its most distinctive features, which were quite revolutionary for the time, included:
Takedown Capability: The rifle quickly and easily separates into two halves (barrel/forend and receiver/stock) without tools, making it highly portable and easy to store or clean.
Bottom Ejection: Spent cases are ejected downwards, which keeps them clear of the shooter‚s face and allows for a clean, uninterrupted receiver profile, ideal for engraving. This also makes it truly ambidextrous.
Tubular Magazine in the Buttstock: To maintain the rifle‚s sleek lines, the tubular magazine is housed within the buttstock, loaded through a port on the side (though early models had a top-loading port).
