Sako (Suojeluskuntain Ase- ja Konepaja Oy) is a Finnish firearm and ammunition manufacturer with a long history of producing high-quality rifles, initially for military purposes and later for the civilian market. The L579 was designed by Eino Mäkinen at the Sako factory in 1958. It was an evolution of the earlier L57 rifle. The design aimed to incorporate more precision-cast parts from a new foundry, optimizing manufacturing efficiency without sacrificing quality. The rifle was originally named Sako L579, but the \"Forester\" designation was later added, reflecting its intended use as a reliable hunting rifle. While designed in 1958, production of the L579 began around 1959-1960.
