Description: Rare & Imposing Pair or “Brace” of Brass Box Lock Flintlock Blunderbuss Coach Pistols with Snap Bayonets by Brander & Potts, London, approximately .56 caliber smoothbore with .915" flared muzzles, mfg. circa 1802-1827. This is an extraordinary pair of pistols which must be held to fully appreciate the size, quality, and condition. These are large, heavy, true London guns in remarkable original condition. Judging from their design they were either intended to be traveling pistols for coach guard or they may have been made for a wealthy sea going privateer during the Napoleonic Wars. Each pistol measures 12 ¼" long (18 3/16" with bayonets out) and weighs over 2 lbs. The London proofed barrels measure 7" long with the first half octagon transitioned to round with turned flared muzzles. Rammers are mounted on the left side with 6 ½" long (5" blade) spring loaded triangular bayonets mounted on the right. The locks are engraved with a military stand of arms on each side with “BRANDER & POTTS” inscribed within a banner on the left side and “LONDON” inscribed on the right. Both pistols are essentially in identical condition. The brass has an attractive mellowed luster and the metal components have a silver/gray patina. The large wood grips have a lovely untouched original finish and are fitted with solid silver shield escutcheons. One pistol has some diagonal cracks at the top of the grip on either side with a fine crack between the tang and silver shield while the other pistol has a tiny repaired chip at the lower side corners on both sides. The spring loaded bayonets are actuated by pulling a sliding release on the right side. Both bayonets snap out very strong and fast and are difficult to lock up just with the flick of your wrist but they do manually lock in and release properly. Box lock actions feature both internal half cocks and external sliding safeties. The actions are strong and crisp and function flawlessly. Frizzens smoothly and securely snap shut and spring forward. Incredibly both guns retain their original horn tipped wood rammers. A seriously impressive pair of big self defense pistols that would be difficult to improve upon. These would make a grand statement displayed in any gun room or den! Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique arms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
