Half-Round, Half-Octagonal Barrel, Double Set Triggers
Here we present an antique Half Stock Long Rifle by J. Harding of Lowell, Massachusetts, made circa the 1860s. J. Harding appears to have been a small producer of high-quality rifles, especially of the heavier barreled target variety. Like this rifle, his work tends to have had German silver hardware and double set triggers. This rifle has a medium to heavy barrel with a half-octagon, half-round profile in .44 caliber. The rifle’s sights are mounted on the barrel. This rifle shows every indication of precision and accuracy and high fit and finish, but it is not nearly as heavy as some of his other rifles which were made to shoot from a rested position. This rifle would still have been at home in the woods and on the prairies.
The overall condition is near fine. Original finish and patina throughout. Clear makers marking on the barrel. The action is excellent and crisp with very nice set triggers. The bore is reflective with deep, sharp rifling. The stock is in very good condition, showing careful use. This is a handsome, well-made rifle from New England!
