Here we present an antique Shagreen Wrapped Stock Reservoir Air Gun, made circa the early 1800s in Europe. Air guns represent the oldest pneumatic technology. The oldest existing mechanical air gun dates back to about 1580 and is in the Livrustkammaren Museum in Stockholm. This is approximately what most historians recognize as the beginning of the modern air gun. Throughout 17th to 19th century, air guns in .30 to .51 calibers were used to hunt big game, deer, and wild boar. These air rifles were charged using a pump to fill an air reservoir and gave velocities from 650 to 1,000 ft/s. They were also used in warfare, the most recognized example being the Girandoni air rifle. Air guns of this style were used primarily for indoor target shooting. "Wind guns" had several advantages over conventional firearms including that they were quieter, smokeless, quicker to reload, and they also required less cleaning since they did not require corrosive black powder. There are no visible marker markings and has a rotating faucet breech that loads from the top when in full cock. When the trigger is pulled, the faucet breech rotates and lines up with the bore, while simultaneously allowing air to pass through in order to propel the ball. It is chambered in approximately .42 caliber/10.5 mm and features a part octagon barrel, and a shagreen (shark or stingray skin) wrapped iron stock air reservoir. The overall condition is very good. The action is excellent and strong. The bore is bright and smooth. Everything fits nice and tight. The shagreen is a bit brittle and cracked, showing its age, but is mostly there. A fantastic and rare piece! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 28 inches. Caliber: .40 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
