The Colt Single Action Army, also known as the Peacemaker, is one of the most popular firearms of all time and has been so since its introduction in 1873. It was built to replace the many cartridge conversion revolvers that were prevalent in the post-Civil War period. When the SAA was introduced, it changed everything. It featured the addition of a top strap in the frame for increased strength, an 1851 Navy grip, the manual ejector rod found on the previous M1871-72 open top revolvers, and most importantly, the ability to shoot centerfire ammunition. The addition of a top strap allowed the SAA to continue production after the introduction of smokeless powder in the 1880s. The SAA was popular with lawmen, ranchers, bandits, and soldiers. It was used by the U.S. Army as the Model of 1873 in .45 Colt, the SAA’s most famous chambering. The SAA chambered for over 30 different cartridges, for which the .45 was the most well-known, alongside the popular 44-40, 38-40, 32-20, and many others. The first generation of the SAA was produced between 1873 and 1940 when production stopped due to the need to produce M1911A1 pistols in greater numbers for use by the U.S. military. The SAA re-entered production in 1956, chambered for four cartridges, the 45 Colt, 44 Special, 357 Magnum, and 38 Special. Colt temporarily ceased production in 1974. Much of the machinery used to make the SAA was by then worn out and Colt needed to retool. A few changes were made to the design to make the SAA easier to mass produce. These included changing the pitch of the barrel’s threads from 20 TPI to 24 TPI, a pressed in cylinder bushing instead of the removable type found in previous generations, and reshaping of the ratchet at the rear of the cylinders which also necessitated a different shape on the rotating hand. The SAA 3rd Generation was put into production in 1976 chambered in 45 Colt and by the end of the year in 357 Magnum as well. Sadly, in a very unwise decision, Colt took the SAA out of the catalogue in 1982 right as Cowboy Action Shooting was taking off and the market for SAAs was already beginning to increase. Individual SAAs continued to be built on a custom basis through the Colt Custom Shop. By 1993, finally realizing they had shot themselves in the foot, Colt brought back the SAA to the Catalogue in .45 Colt and .44-40. The next year, the .38-40 was offered.
The .45 Colt was originally created in 1872 as a collaboration between Colt and Union Metallic Cartridge (UMC). It was intended for use in the prototype of what was eventually produced as the Model of 1873. The cartridge featured a Benet-primed copper case, 40 grains of black powder, and a flat-nosed, 255-grain lead bullet. In the following years, several improvements were made. The Benet primer was replaced by the Boxer primer which allowed for reloading at the unit level. The weak copper case was replaced by a stronger brass one. The 40-grain load proved to be fast (1050 ft/s) but produced too much recoil for the average soldier, and so the charge was reduced to 28 grains of black powder (855 ft/s). The 40-grain loading could still be found on the commercial market for many years. Eventually, the .45 Colt made the transition to smokeless powder. The final alteration made to the cartridge involved adding an extractor groove to the base of the case just above the rim. This final modification allowed for the reliable extraction of spent cases from the chamber of a lever action rifle.
This 3rd Generation SAA is the P1840 model, chambered for the classic .45 Colt. It is in excellent condition and comes with the original factory box. The grips are the checkered plastic type with the Colt Pony and Eagle emblems. The Colt ’s serial number search program states that this SAA was made in 1998. The only form of wear on the revolver is some wear present of the cylinder. Otherwise, the bluing on the revolver is immaculate and the color case hardening is exquisite. This SAA would make a nice addition to any Colt collection.
