The Marlin 1895 has been a popular choice for hunting guides and woodsmen for decades, a compact and wieldy lever-action rifle chambered in .45-70 Government (and .450 Marlin in a much smaller quantity). This rifle is a 1983 1895SS model. The 1895SS is a the sporter rifle with 22" barrel, open sights, and drilled and tapped for scopes. The SS designation officially was introduced in 1984 with the addition of a crossbolt safety—the "sporter safety" model. This rifle, with its serial dating to 1983 and 1895SS markings would make it one of the earliest units of the 1895SS. This rifle has plain walnut furniture with an oil-rubbed finish. The receiver and barrel feature deep bluing, which is in excellent condition. The front sight is a blade sight with brass bead, textured ramp, and shroud; the rear sight has an elevator ramp for adjustment and the receiver has a Weaver scope base mounted to the receiver. The hammer has a hammer extension installed for easier manipulation with a scope installed and the crossbolt safety system has been removed and has a screwed-in spacer in its place. This rifle is in great condition and has a good barrel on it. The furniture has no cracks and nearly no signs of wear or usage. The finish quality is very good and even throughout. Again, the only things non-original to the rifle are the hammer extension, safety delete, and Weaver mount. There is no case or box included with this rifle. .45-70 Government
