The AMT Back Up is a retro pocket pistol introduced in the late 1970s which is known for being a very accurate pistol, though having some rather interesting design aspects. Early Back Ups were made by another company, Ordnance Manufacturing Company, before being picked up by Arcadia Machine & Tool (AMT) in California. AMT, known for somewhat revolutionary firearms designs such as the Auto Mag automatic magnum pistol and the 1911-esque Hardballer, famous for its screentime in the Terminator films. The Back Up originally was a single action-only pistol with a manual safety located where the magazine release is typically located on most automatic pistols and a grip safety. The original Back Ups also had an interesting slide design with a top-mounted extractor. Later Back Up pistols changed to a double action-only design, removed all external safety mechanisms, and changed the slide design to include an extractor located on the side of the ejection port. These design changes made the Back Up more well-suited to pocket carry methods. This unit is one of those later Back Up designs. The AMT Back Up is known for being a finicky pistol to maintain. Its lack of a slide catch and requirement of a pin punch for disassembly makes the gun a bit of a chore to clean and maintain. However, when the gun is in its best operating condition, the pistol is known for being a very accurate pistol, especially for its size. The pistol is made up of an all-steel construction with blowback operation. The heavy double action trigger makes up for the lack of external safeties. The pistol holds five rounds of .380 Auto/ACP. The sights aren't much to speak of—just a simple groove that runs the length of the slide. But, this makes for a completely snag-free design, as intended. Our pistol for sale is in overall good condition. The pistol show no signs of significant external wear or damage, and the barrel is clean with very good rifling. There is slight external surface rust spots on the barrel, but no pitting is present. This AMT Back Up includes three 5-round magazines, with one including a steel finger extension baseplate. .380 ACP
