Description:
Here we have a rare bird in several ways; a Merkel pre-war 20 gauge 300 series w/ double underlugs and Kersten crossbolt that is fitted so closely it is invisible when closed. Straight grip stock of very highly figured walnut with ebony teardrops behind fancy back frame and the special order extra long forend wood, 26" Bohler Antinit steel barrels, ejectors, double triggers w/ articulated front, Numbered in gold on action and barrels with Roman numeral III. The story I got on this gun was that it was #3 of a trio ordered by a Michigan man in the mid 1930's. Does not have Stoeger import markings on barrels. Proofmark dates it to 1936, S/N 23310, and here is the interesting part; it is proofed as a 19 bore, meaning it is overbored. An 18 bore is .637, and these bores are .634 in both upper and lower with .030" constriction of choke in both upper and lower barrels. MWT is .025" in lower and .026" in upper. Thickness at forcing cones is .095" in both barrels, which is correct for the higher proof fluid steel such as Bohler. This guns shoots wonderfully and not underbored and overchoked as are most German shotguns. LOP is 15" over a very high quality leather covered pad. Chambers are proofed at 70mm(2 3/4"). Weight is 6 lbs. 8 ozs., hinge and lockup is very tight as all these higher end Merkels are. Metal is clean and bright on receiver and barrels except for one place at the breech end that is slightly stained (picture). All in all, a very scarce and unusual prewar Merkel in a smallbore in great condition. Thanks for looking.
