Savage Revolving Fire Arms Co. of Middletown, Connecticut, manufactured approximately 25,520 on U.S. contract between c. 1862-1864. A Model 1861 rifle-musket is a required shoulder arm for any Civil War collection. The Model 1861 Springfield played a crucial role as the most widely used infantry weapon by Union forces during the American Civil War, and most saw very hard use including captured examples on the Confederate side. Model 1861s were manufactured by Springfield Armory, as well as made by a variety of contractors following the exact same pattern, such as this one by Savage. This muzzleloading percussion military rifle features a 40 inch barrel for use with .58 caliber Minié ball. The barrel is fitted with a blue finished three-leaf rear sight and a blade front sight. A well made replacement ramrod is mounted below. The lock plate is marked with the American eagle motif above “U.S.” at the center, “SAVAGE. R.F.A. Co./MIDDLETOWN, Ct.” at the front, and “1863” date at the tail. The top breech area of the barrel also bears the “1863” date along with the standard “V/P” proof stamps above the eagle head, and “N.J” New Jersey marking on the left side. The left stock flat is stamped with two lightly visible government inspection cartouches. "US" stamped on top of the buttplate. A partly visible old carved name that appears to start with a “J” is located on bottom of the stock ahead of the trigger guard. The rifle has very distinctive untouched original lock markings and barrel markings. There is some areas of pitting towards the front half of the barrel and on some of the components. The edges of the wood are defined, with some very light but viewable cartouche stamps on the left flat, and a few cracks at the rear ahead of the buttplate, remaining sound. The lock works perfectly, with crisp clicks. This thing is priced to sell, and will proudly fill the spot in any Civil War collection. Price includes shipping in the 48 states. Layaway is also an option. As an antique, this can ship directly to your doorstep in most states! Price: $2,200.00 Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .58 Manufacturer: Savage Revolving Firearms Co.
