Payment Types Accepted: certified check, postal m.o. Description: This is a rare and fairly early Winchester Model 1895. It is chambered in the .38-72 caliber, one of Winchester's proprietory rounds, only offered in early production years of the 1895. I believe only the 40-72 and the 38-72 were available with an octagonal barrel. My 42nd edition of the Blue Book values a 1895 rifle in 60% condition at $3400, and says to add 100% for an octagon barrel ( which doubles the estimate - 6800 ) - this rifle is offered at a much more reasonable price than book value, but still, you just don't see many like this. The serial number places it's manufacture at 1902. The rifle is confirmed by a Cody Museum search. These early Winchesters saw very hard use, and despite that fact, this rifle has survived in better than average condition. There is a good amount of blue remaining - better in protected areas, less in the typical carry and handling areas with some light spots of wear, minor dings, and light cleaning, turning to a smooth patina. The lettering is very good, and legible. The barrel is very good - 26" tapered octagon, with a good bore - there is some shine with very strong lands/grooves. Very little corrosion, and some longitudinal scratches, overall about a 7.5 or a bit better - Much better than most blackpowder bores, this would still be a great shooter. The action works perfectly, with excellent internals, nice bolt face, etc. This rifle was carried and hunted with, but not shot alot. The sights are a Marbles rear and a Lyman front. The wood is good, nice antique amber color, unsanded, but with many marks, slight dings, scratches, a solid hairline crack on the right fore end tip, lots of character. ***** This is a 'modern' gun, and must ship to a FFL, C&R lic. okay.
