ENGRAVED British Antique THO. PHILLIPS Half Stock PERCUSSION Fowling Piece

BACK ACTION Mid-19th Century HUNTING/HOMESTEAD Gun

Here we present an antique Thomas Phillips Percussion Shotgun, made sometime in the mid-19th Century in London, England. Used for sport, provision and protection, shotguns then, like now, have always proven themselves invaluable. This stout part octagonal barrel shotgun is in 12 gauge, primarily made to take larger sized game.

Rifle and shotgun manufacture during this era was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over Europe, the United States, and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many makers’ names of these percussion firearms have been lost over time. This shotgun is one such example. In the earlier years of the United States, a shotgun such as this would have been a necessary tool to have in all households. A shotgun like this would have been hanging over every fireplace in frontier American, and necessary to have if you wanted to eat, along with protection when ne’er do wells came around. This would have been primarily a firearm designed for hunting both big and small game, along with a bird or two sitting on the pond.

The overall condition is good. Smooth and original brown patina. Strong action but the nipple is damaged. The hammer is missing a chip. The bore is in good shape for its age. This example sports a very good stock with sharp wrist checkering. Lightly engraved lock. Hand engraved script is on the wrist plaque. Markings are legible. Nice silver barrel bands. Front ramrod barrel band is detached.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 41 inches.

Caliber: Approximately 12 Gauge
