1850s STARK COUNTY, OHIO Antique P.H. SCHANTZ LONG RIFLE .46 caliber

OHIO MADE American Pioneer Rifle

Here we present an antique P.H. Schantz Percussion Rifle made circa 1850s. Philip Schantz (b. 1819 in Hesse Darmstadt in Germany; d. 1909 Barry County, Michigan), was an Ohio gunmaker who had shops in Lawrence Township and Canal Fulton, Ohio. Philip immigrated to the United States at the age of 9 (c1828) and was both a farmer and gunsmith. He is also associated with the gunmakers George Sipe and James Mason, who may have apprenticed with him.
This example’s octagonal barrel is in .45 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many of the maker’s names of these percussion rifles have been lost over time.

The overall condition is good. Original finish and patina. The action is strong. The bore is smooth bored and patinated. The stock has attractive grain and shows use. There is a repair around the lock inletting that is stable and subtle. Ramrod tube absent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 35 inches.

Caliber: .45 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
