Description:
Offered here for sale and just acquired this  rather fascinating and collectible  Smith & Wesson Model No. 1, 3rd Issue revolver, a  rare two-tone blue and nickel finish which we have seldom seen in our more than 5 decades in the business. This tip-up revolver .22 Short Rimfire has a  7-shot cylinder 3-1/4"barrel. Dual-tone blued frame, nickeled barrel and cylinder  very scarce. Birdseye maple (period correct and desirable) for post  Post-Civil War era.  Serial Number 80178 –this revolver was manufactured around 1874–1875.  This falls into the mid-production era when Smith & Wesson was transitioning from wartime to peacetime manufacturing and experimenting with finishes. Smith & Wesson did experiment with finishes during the late Civil War and early postwar period, especially with their Model No. 2 Army. It's quite uncommon to find a Model No. 1, 3rd Issue with this type of factory two-tone finish, making it a highly desirable collector’s variation. Blued frame with nickeled barrel/cylinder likely reflects either a factory experiment or special order.Frame: Near full blued finish – excellent and rare.
  • Barrel/Cylinder: ~85% original nickel – strong for a 150-year-old piece.
  • Erosion: Typical wear from use; front of cylinder and muzzle show expected powder burns and abrasion.
  • Bore: Still good – enhances shootability and value.
  • Grips: Birdseye maple, fine condition – correct for this model.
  • Markings: Sharp barrel markings – suggests it has not been heavily polished or refinished. This is a beautiful example of Smith & Wesson’s early innovation and experimentation in firearms design and finishing during the post-Civil War era.
