LEWIS Antique 1850s Half Stock BACK ACTION Percussion COMBINATION Gun RIFLE/SHOTGUN Side by Side made in TROY, NEW YORK Here we present an antique N. Lewis Back Action Half Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century in Troy, New York. Nelson Lewis was a rifle maker who was well known for his muzzle-loading hunting rifles and combination guns. Nelson Lewis was born in 1811 near Speigletown, New York, a few miles north of Troy. As a young man he followed market hunting, which at the time was a legitimate business and highly profitable if a man was a good hunter and a good shot. It is said that Lewis possessed both of these qualifications. Its stout ribbed barrel is in .40 caliber on the rifled side with an approximately 16 gauge smoothbore other. This double barrel percussion gun is a design that New York and Pennsylvania gun makers seemed to favor during this period marked by westward expansion, hunting, trapping, and frontier living. This rifle beside a smoothbore would have given the user two shots instead of one in a day when most people had to make one count. This would have come in handy when hunting various types of game as well as defending oneself against dangerous game or two-legged predators. The smooth bore would have offered versatility in that either shot, a single ball or conical, or a combination of “buck ‘n’ ball” could be used depending on the circumstances. The overall condition is good. Original finish and patina. The actions are excellent—strong and crisp. The bores are patinated with strong rifling in the rifled bore. The stock has been repaired around the wrist area. The barrel wedge is absent. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 29-1/2 inches. Caliber: approximately 16 Gauge Smoothbore and .40 Caliber Rifle Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
