Description:
Early 1960's S&W model 36, 5-shot .38 special. Often called the "Chief's Special" this 2" barrel, round butt .38 was an often carried duty weapon for police detectives and also as a back-up for patrol officers.
This early version has "diamond" S&W wood grips and a flat latch. Original box and paperwork.
From the lack of wear on the breech face, the intact blue on the muzzle and the face of the cylinder I conclude that this 36 was handled much more that it was ever shot! There are small scratches and marks on the lower right side of the frame that makes me think the cleaning rod and/or patch holder in the box caused those marks..not from carrying it in a holster.
