Description:
c1830s PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA Antique HOWDAH Type Pistol PROSPER VALLEÉ

Large .60 Caliber Sidearm for the Frontier

Here we present an antique Howdah Type Percussion Pistol by Prosper Valleé, made circa the 1830s in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Valleé is listed as being at the Corner of Walnut and 2nd Streets in Philadelphia from 1826 to 1840. John Krider apprenticed under him beginning circa 1826 and eventually purchased the business from his master circa 1839, transforming it into not only a larger manufactory but also a large dealer of sporting goods. We believe Prosper Valleé died in 1861 and is buried in Greenwood Heights, Kings County, New York.

This “manstopper” pistol is large and has twin .62 caliber bores. This would have been a “point and shoot” pistol primarily used for close contact. This would have been useful in many circumstances such as on the Frontier against man or beast, as well as in town or on the seas. In a day when the single shot pistol was the standard, this side by side percussion pistol would have been a very handy self-defense weapon to have around, having two shots to fire off instead of one!

The left lock on this gun is marked “PHILA”, with the right lock marked “P. VALLEÉ”.

The overall condition is very good+. Good twist pattern on the barrels with patina throughout. The actions are excellent, strong and crisp. The bores are smooth and patinated. The stock shows use and remains solid. A very sturdy and workmanlike American pistol made in Philadelphia for the wilds!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 7 inches.

Caliber: .60 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
