Here we present an antique Slotter & Company Plains Rifle, made circa 1860 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This rifle was the sort taken by many to the Frontier of mid-19th Century North America. It was an indispensable tool for providing food and protection whether on the trail or on the homestead, for four- and two-legged predators alike. This rifle is relatively plain and utilitarian and features brass hardware on a sturdy wooden stock. Double set triggers were standard on these types of rifles, providing both a safety measure as well as a nudge for practical accuracy with a light and crisp trigger pull. A heavier barrel being useful for larger powder charges as well as steadying the rifle for off-hand shots. This one is very similar in configuration to the famous St. Louis Hawken.
Slotter and Company was comprised of Frederick & Henry Schlotterbeck, Samuel Burch and William Carrigan, and they were perhaps most famous for their high quality, extremely close copy of Henry Deringer’s pistols. They were known to have sold their wares as far as San Francisco to an outfitter by the name of A.J. Plate. In an advertisement about their rifles, Slotter stated that their rifles were superior to others, being made completely in-house with the exception of Remington barrels. This barrel is marked on the left side with the number “608” as well as “WART” (warranted) and “GAIN TWIST”, the type of rifling utilized in the barrel. Gain twist, also known as progressive rifling, was more difficult to produce and therefore more expensive, and it is used to more rapidly accelerate the spiral of the projectile as it nears the muzzle of the barrel. This measure lengthened the life of the barrel by decreasing the wear toward the breech. “SLOTTER & Co PHILA” marked lock and barrel. Various batch or part numbers “14” throughout. Double set triggers (set rear trigger first), half-length stock, medium-heavy octagonal barrel in .54 caliber.
The overall condition is good. Patina throughout. Clear markings. The action is excellent. The bore is patinated with good rifling. The stock has a repair on the left side forward and rearward of the sideplate to the barrel tang; several other small, stable splits along the grain; otherwise solid. The ramrod is a later replacement. Part numbers match throughout such as on the sights, barrel tang, etc.
