“Made for Schaeffer & Loney”
Here we present an antique Engraved British Double Barrel Side by Side Percussion Hammer Shotgun, made circa the late 1850s to the early 1860s. This example is retailer marked “Made for Schaeffer & Loney / Baltimore”. Schaeffer & Loney operated a hardware store in Baltimore in the 1840s-50s and was an importer of firearms and hardware.
Birmingham was the epicenter for English gunmaking all the way through and continuing after the turn of the century. This is an English fowling piece that is elegant in its simplicity and practicality. This double barrel hammer gun would have been used primarily for putting game on the table or defending one’s home. During this era, there were many English and Belgian gunmakers who were capitalizing on the eager markets in the United States. Its mid-length barrel made for easy hunting in the dense woods or traipsing through the marsh looking for small game and waterfowl. This would have been a staple in most homesteads hanging over the mantle during the tumultuous times of the mid-1800s.
The overall condition is good. Bright gray patina. The stock checkering is worn from use with a repair above the left lock. The stock was re-varnished. Crisp actions. Clear markings. Darkened bores. A nice piece of Baltimore history!
