JOHNSTONE Double Barrel SxS C&R HAMMERLESS Shotgun SPORTING GUN of CLABROUGH and JOHNSTON Lineage Here we present a C&R Game Scene Engraved British D.V. Johnstone Boxlock Double Barrel Side by Side Hammerless Shotgun, made circa the turn of the century in Birmingham, England. J. P. Clabrough came to America and bought a hardware store in San Francisco on the heels of the 1849 California gold rush. Though they sold many brands, their own arms were manufactured in Birmingham, England. They later also opened a retail store in London. Their hardware store in San Francisco was destroyed in the great earthquake of 1906, but they relocated and continued operations. They were initially traded as D.V. Johnstone, as is this example, then Clabrough and Johnstone, and also as J. P. Clabrough. England and Belgium were the epicenter for European gunmaking all the way through the turn of the century. This is an English sporting gun that is elegant in its simplicity and practicality and has a beautifully engraved game scene.
