The primary improvement of the 3rd Model design was the introduction of a push button release mechanism to release the barrel latch. During the period of production from 1887-1890 some 37,350 .38 S&W Second Model guns were produced. In 1888, a .32 S&W version of the revolver was also introduced, but on a slightly smaller frame. The 3rd Model guns were produced from 1890 through 1898 in the serial number range of 42,484 to 116,002 with some 73,518 of the revolvers being produced during that period. No box.
