Description:
Serial #8388, .54 Caliber black powder percussion, 30.25 inch octagon barrel with a bright, excellent bore. This is a Boar Hunting rifle manufactured by W. Parker in London circa late 1830's. The barrel is marked "W. Parker" and "Maker To His Majesty. Holborn London" with the side plates marked "W.Parker". This rifle was made William Parker of 233 High Holborn, London (1793-1841), a company that was eventually known as Parker, Field & Sons. He was Gunmaker to the Duke of Kent, Prince Edward and King William IV. The company had gained prominence for a safe and superior lock mechanism. This fine example of a large bore, sporting boar hunting rifle remains in excellent condition with the barrels showing virtually all of the original brown finish with a beautiful laminate pattern. The barrel is equipped with a knife/bayonet lug and has provisions for a sling on the belly of the stock and a hole under the barrel just behind the bayonet lug. The side plate, dolphin head hammer, upper tang, trigger guard, buttplate, screws all have very fine foliate scroll and remain in excellent condition. The checkered walnut stock shows old marks and contusions with a small crack on the forearm tip and some areas showing darkening from added protective oils over time. The lock mechanism has the unique slide safety feature allowing it to be primed with a cap and locked into a half cock position. The action functions properly with a strong spring. It comes with a steel ramrod and a folding rear sight that allows for two different ranges. A beautiful example of a very high quality London gun. Antique
