ANTEBELLUM GAME GETTING Rifle w/SET TRIGGER
Here we present an antique M. Dickson Marked Percussion Rifle made circa the mid 1800s in Louisville, Kentucky. Moses Dickson was Louisville's premier gunsmith from 1822 until his death in 1863, and in the mid-1820s he made the first Louisville-style patchbox. Dickson was a good businessman and eventually expanded his gunsmithing activities into one of Louisville’s largest sporting goods stores.
As sales increased, he began to import English firearms and related items to enlarge his product lines, in addition to selling his own guns which were always his premium products. This rifle would have been used to put food on the table or defend the homestead against unwanted intruders!
The overall condition is good. This example presents with a mixed gray and brown patina. The stock has been re-varnished and has a chip missing above the lock. There is a stable crack on the stock near the left screw. The hammer does not hold in the cock position. The bore has dimmed, but retains some shine and has serviceable rifling. Light engravings on the lock. The wrist is drilled and tapped for a peep/sight.
