Up for sale today from my personal collection is a favorite- a 1949 Ithaca Model 37 in 16ga. 28" barrel and fixed modified choke make this quintessential American upland gun ideal for everything from pheasant and jumped ducks to grouse and rabbit. These carry like a 20, but give that extra payload ability of a 16ga, which is more than stout enough for anything that flies. These vintage 16ga pump guns are about as American a gun as you can get as a sportsman today! I find them to be handier and lighter in the field than a Model 12 Winchester or Wingmaster or Model 31, the only other pump guns really in the same realm. I have another 37 from 1949 that was threaded for Colonial thin walls many years ago. I do not know if this one could be done similarly, but I would imagine it could be done, although I have found Modified to be a very deadly and versatile choke on clays and birds alike.
These 37s are among the best every made, and this one has exceptionally nice wood. The wood appears to have been nicely refinished in the past. There is one tiny chip missing behind the trigger guard as most of these guns develop, pictured. This could be disappeared by a competent stock maker without issue. Original bluing on the metal is in great shape, with no rust, pitting, or even much wear present.
These are fantastically light, slick, and handy little bird guns, and are vastly superior in fit and finish to the later ones. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or for more photos.
