BROWN CIRCA 1840-50. 52” overall with 36” octagon .31 caliber deeply rifled barrel signed in a German silver inlay on the top flat in script “L. BROWN”. Original elevator rear and German silver blade front sights. Lock plate signed “H.ELWELL/WARRENTED”. Double set triggers and brass nipple flash guard. Maple half stock with German silver patch box, trigger guard, ramrod pipes, forend cap and butt plate. Extensive floral and geometric German silver inlays on both sides of the stock and the forend. Oval German silver cheek rest escutcheon with engraved “EAGLE/13 STARS” motif and extensive ‘VINE AND LEAF” stock inlay work with light engraving. Patch box and mounts engraved in a complimentary folk art fashion. Very good original condition overall with the exception of the hammer screw which is a modern replacement and the hammer is repaired and re-blued. Forward trigger guard tang repaired. Also lock does not hold on cock and triggers do not set properly. Stock broken and crudely repaired at the wrist. Barrel and lock with the original medium grey patina. Stock with the original finish and all the original inlays. Very good bore with well defined rifling. Original brass tipped hickory ramrod with the original patinated finish. A very similar rifle, though not as ornately inlaid, by Lemuel Brown is pictured on page 99 , Volume V of “OHIO GUNSMITHS AND ALLIED TRADESMEN 1750-1950” by Don Hutslar. Hutslar also states on page 75 of his book “GUNSMITHS OF OHIO 18TH & 19TH CENTURIES, VOLUME 1” that Brown’s full name appears to have been Lemuel Green Brown located in Athens County, Ohio. Brown is also noted as having been a Trustee of the Ames Turnpike in 1835 and may be the same Lemuel Green Brown still alive in the 1870’s working in Clinton County, Wilmington Township.
