Some authorities have suggested that fewer than 50 were made with these carryover barrel blanks from the production era of its famed predecessor, the Model 54. S/N 5284 with matching scribed bolt unveiled in early 1937. The metal condition is outstanding, showing near 98% on the beautiful rust blued barrel and the rare polished, carbonum blued receiver. The bottom metal is also nice but does show some carry wear and typical light flaking on the trigger guard. The wood is not far behind with its beautiful original lacquer, but does have a few scattered dings, most notably on the R side near the buttplate. The buttplate transition shows the correct slightly radiused cut with a good overall fit, but the length of pull is about 12 3/4", so appears to have been shortened about 1/2" at some point in time. All of the very unique early features of this special gun are present and correct including a square faced floorplate release plunger, "fat" bolt release plunger, "target" stamped trigger, under forearm rail "in the white", etc. The original sights and scope blocks are also correct which consist of a Lyman 17 globe front, and the factory inletted full block Lyman 48 WJS receiver sight (most Target rifles had the Lyman 48WH but not these), along with original dimpled scope blocks. The receiver sight's inner component #s are all matching. The top of rear receiver bridge remains UNDRILLED. The barrel is the correct 24" with a minty bore. All mechanical functions are crisp and working properly as well. A beautiful and very rare rifle for the Model 70 collector!
