Description:
Custom built 12 gauge Francotte BLE with Sideplates. A magnificent gun in great condition, given circa 1950 comstruction. Cased in leather/canvas case. Serial number 89874. Combines the beauty of a custom made European gun with modern dimensions and capabilities. Gun custom built and engraved for L. VanCauwenberghe. Hand engraved by Leonard Smeets, Francotte's lead engraver, and so marked by him. This is an exquisite piece any owner would be proud to own and shoot.
Original Francotte Chrome/Nickel Alloy Steel Barrels. Length measures 72cm (28 in). Choked 1/4 R and 3/4 L (Chokes measure .011 in R and .030 in L, easily honed to new owner's preference). 70mm (2 3/4 in) chambers. Chrome/nickel alloy steel barrels with game style matted rib. Excellent hidden third bite with wraparound ejectors in the Purdey style. One small surface blemish on left barrel (see photo 9). Perfect bores. Single front bead. Originally proved at 183 mm (.720 in), current bore measurements at 9 inches of .721 R and .722 L, well in proof. Minimum wall thickness .029 in both barrels. Metal condition at 98%. Right barrel is engraved "Auguste Francotte Brevette A Liege", and left barrel is engraved "Fait Specialment Pour L. Van Cauwenberghe, Anvers".
French Walnut stock and fore-end, with hand-rubbed oil finish. POW grip configuration, with classic splinter forend with Anson button release. Perfect checkering in both grip and foreend. Checkered butt. Dimensions are 14 3/8 in Length of Pull, 1 1/2 in Drop at Comb and 2 3/8 in Drop at Heel. Slight Cast-off. Wood condition 98%, with handling marks only.
Sideplated BLE Action. Durable and Beautiful. Engraved by L. Smeets, Head Engraver at Francotte. Engraving in classic Rose and Scroll pattern, with 11 flower "islands" surrounded by perfect scrollwork. Double triggers with front trigger articulated. No rust or damage to the action. Engraving has not been 'brushed".
A modern gun hand built circa 1950, ready for the field today, in its canvas and leather toe under case. Great game weight of 6 pounds, 8 ounces. Fully in proof and still at manufacturer specifications. The gun has been shot little and preserved well. Likely the finest Francotte of its type available today. Replacing this gun with new is a five figure, two year exercise, and this is not a "heritage" gun made elsewhere. It is an original Francotte, ready to go at the birds of your choice.
