Evans U.S. NAVY Model 1826 CONVERSION Pistol One of < 1,000 Made in VALLEY FORGE, PENNSYLVANIA Here we present an antique W.L. Evans Model 1826 Percussion Conversion Pistol manufactured in 1830 in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. This pistol would have started out life as a flintlock, and converted when the more reliable percussion firing system was introduced. This pistol is one of less than 1,000 manufactured by Evans. In 1825, John Rogers, a gun manufacturer in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, could not get enough money to fund his government contracts, so he went into business with W.L. Evans. They produced these Model 1826 pistols between the years of 1830 and 1831. Less than 1,000 of these particular pistols were made, making it very rare. This pistol was part of a contract for the Navy and is nearly identical to the Model 1826 made by Simeon North. Rogers and Evan’s factory was largely successful until a flood of Valley Creek washed away the entire factory. A new one was never built. While the years in between the War of 1812 and the American Civil War may appear to be quiet, this period of American history was quite busy as more states and territories were born and settled, Native Americans were resettled, and both Native and slave rebellions were put down. Primary conflicts that would have involved this piece during its service life were the Seminole Wars, the Pawnee Expedition, the Mexican-American War and even the American Civil War. This pistol was converted to percussion using the Belgian Style Alteration method, more commonly known as the “Cone Type” conversion. All external lock parts were removed with the screw hole plugged, the pan ground flush with lock plate (leaving the remnants intact) and the small existing cavity in the pan filled with brass to give it a level or squared off profile along the top. The vent hole of the barrel was plugged with a nipple screwed into the threaded receptacle at the top of the barrel, set off center towards the lock side. Then, adding the distinctive arsenal, military hammer. This is the type of conversion that was only done at Harper’s Ferry and Springfield and is sometimes referred to as an armory conversion. The overall condition is good. Patina throughout. The action is strong and has only full-cock. The bore is smooth and dim. The stock is cracked through the grip as many of these are prone to be, and the cracks are stable and not mobile. Faint inspection markings on the left stock flat. The underside of the stock has some soldier graffiti that says “RIAL”, which we believe is a surname of Spanish origin. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 8-1/2 inches. Caliber: .54 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
