With Nicely Figured Wood & Engraving!
Here we present a C&R Charles Daly J.P. Sauer & Sohn Made German Drilling in 12 Gauge and 8mm, made in Suhl, Prussia circa 1900. This example was manufactured in Germany by J. P. Sauer & Sohn for the U.S. based Charles Daly, as he was known to produce this gun for Daly. A Drilling, which is German for triplet, normally consists of two matching smoothbore barrels and a rifled barrel but may possibly cover a much broader range of shapes and configurations, such as two rifled barrels and one smoothbore, three smoothbores, or three rifled barrels. This gun is marked “Charles Daly” on both sides of the back action lock plate.
Several other German manufacturers are known to produce these drillings, including Merkel, Simson & Company, along with several others. Since many drillings were made by small manufacturers, each maker would pick whichever layout they preferred, or whatever layout the customer ordered. The most common layout was like this one, a side-by-side shotgun with a centerfire rifled barrel centered on the bottom.
The overall condition is fine. Original blue finish and case colors. The left action (left shotgun bore) does not presently cock or fire and needs tweaking (no spring tension on the cocking arm on that side); the right action and the rifle action work just fine. Mirror bright bores, respectively, remain smooth and rifled. Markings are sharp. Numbers match. The top rib has been drilled and tapped (and filled with screws) for a scope mount. This example is lightly engraved with floral designs. The nicely figured wood is fine with minimal evidence of handling. The butt pad was added later and is well-fitted. A wonderful piece!
