Description:
Antique U.S. Sharps New Model 1859 Carbine, 50/70 Conversion made circa 1859-63 as a percussion carbine, then converted to .50-70 Govt circa 1867 for use in the West by the federal government. Over 100,000 Sharps rifles and carbines were purchased and used by the federal government during the American Civil War. In 1867, the U.S. Ordnance Department contracted with the Sharps Rifle Company for conversion of over 30,000 Sharps percussion carbines to the .50-70 GOVT configuration. Some of these arms retained their original six-groove rifling, while the bores of others were re-lined with three-groove rifling. I haven’t been able to determine if this gun was lined New buttstocks without cartridge boxes were used in all cases where replacement was required, regardless of the original configuration.  Serial # C280XX (C prefix denotes (1000 )280XX)MFG This is a Single Shot Lever operated Falling  block breech Loading Carbine.
